Night and Day

Night falls

Like a barrel going over Niagara Falls
Like a hopeless romantic, head over heels
Like the old woman on the commercial who can’t get up
Like the crusty old leaves that can no longer cling to that oak tree
Like one of those polar vortex bomb cyclones over the middle of the continent
Like April 15, when you owe money to the IRS
Like a paratrooper whose plane has been shot down by friendly fire
Like a storm of fire and brimstone hailing down on someone’s head as they kneelt to pray
Like a heat-seeking missile manufactured in a munitions plant in Texas on an elementary school full of little girls
Like raindrops when the sky is crying
Day breaks

Like a wineglass left in the sink
Like a molar on a stale sourdough roll
Like a record stuck on the same groove, over and over
Like a cell phone thrown off the roof of a tall building
Like a cheap lightbulb made in China
Like the skier’s tibia bone
Like a smashed piñata full of candy
Like our belief in justice and due process
Like a snarl of mangled concrete and rebar
Like our hearts every time we watch the video
